For this bucket-lister, we decided to stick a little closer to home…

Hot Springs Cove off Vancouver Island is a hidden gem in these parts. Located 27 nautical miles northwest of Tofino, the decision to visit this gorgeous, natural beauty is an intentional (and very good) idea.

You won’t get there by chance.

I first visited Hot Springs Cove back in March, 2013. I went again in September, 2018 and it was just as as gorgeous as ever. We started the day by packing a lunch, strapping on our hiking boots, and catching a float plane to Maquinna Provincial Park.

It’s about a 20 minute journey by air on Atleo Air or an hour trip by boat. We highly recommend you take a sea plane bright and early to beat the crowds and ensure you have the hot springs to yourself for a couple hours. Ask for the earliest departure.

Once you arrive at Hot Springs Cove, take an easy 30 minute walk through the beautiful old-growth forest to the Hot Springs.

The Springs are a succession of geothermic pools, which cool down as they cascade towards the ocean. The hottest pool is at least 109 degrees C (228 degrees F) and the coolest around 50 degrees C (122 degrees F).

Bask in the waterfall and soak your sorrows away.

A bathing suit is recommended but, if you go early enough to beat the crowds, you can go in the buff 😉 After a long soak in the cascading pools, we spent hours exploring the rugged coastline, collecting shells and lounging in the sunshine. Then it was time to head back along the boardwalk trail to the dock to be picked up by our seaplane pilot. Your pickup time depends on the tour company you go with and mode of transport.

Plan for an all-day adventure & be sure to pack the following:

  1. Hiking/walking shoes
  2. Comfortable clothing
  3. Extra set of clothing (if it’s raining)
  4. Light jacket/rain shell
  5. Bathing Suit
  6. Towel
  7. Water Bottle
  8. Lunch/Snacks
  9. Sun lotion

Tofino is 6.5-7 hour drive from Vancouver, which includes the 90 minute ferry ride and waiting time. While it’s a bit of a long drive, I promise it will be well worth it! Make this your next weekend destination!
